What are cavities?
Cavities are holes in the surface of your tooth that come from tooth decay. Even though cavities are easy to prevent, most people will have a few. Your dentist can easily treat your cavities, but it's important to catch them before they get too big or cause toothaches, gum swelling, or other pain.

Here are a few tips to help you prevent cavities:

  • Brush, floss, and go to the dentist regularly.
  • Don't eat too many sweets and sweet foods or drink lots of cooldrink and sweet liquids. Try to limit yourself to one cooldrink a day or a few small sweets.
  • Eat crunchy fruits and vegetables (which clean your teeth) or cheese and yogurt (which are good for your teeth and gums) as snacks.
  • Chew sugar-free gum after meals to make saliva. Saliva has chemicals in it that help stop tooth decay.
  • Make sure you use fluoride toothpaste. Fluoride makes your teeth stronger.

What are some of the symptoms of cavities?
If you see a black or brown spot on your tooth or have a toothache that won't go away, see your dentist as soon as possible. If you don't get your teeth treated, the decay can lead to other problems like swollen gums, jaw pain, and headaches

How do you treat cavities?
Cleaning your teeth well, eating healthy foods, and getting regular dental check-ups help prevent these problems.
