The term poultry refers to domesticated birds like chicken, ducks, turkey, guinea fowl and geese. Chickens are the most commonly kept poultry and can be found in almost every home in Africa.
The types of chicken kept in most homes in Africa are of no specifically selected breed or improved crossbreeding. They are referred to as indigenous chicken and they are kept under free-range management. Even though they are raised under poor management, they form an important part of our livelihood and are a valuable source of protein and income. Indigenous chicken can achieve great potential if the risks to their survival and production are reduced.
In this section, we shall learn about housing our chicken safely, feeding our poultry, and controlling the diseases that affect chickens.
